PRESS RELEASE
International Justice Day – 17 July
Let Us Be the Global Voice for Justice!
17 July marks a historic turning point for humanity. On this date, the adoption of the Rome Statute led to the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC), aiming to end impunity for the perpetrators of the gravest international crimes—genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. Today, on the occasion of International Justice Day, the Turkish Coalition for the International Criminal Court (TCICC) reaffirms its commitment to the universal principles of justice.
The ongoing armed conflicts, forced displacements, torture, and widespread human rights violations around the world clearly demonstrate that the need for international criminal justice is more urgent than ever. The ICC plays a complementary role when national justice systems fall short, offering hope for justice to victims.
Although Turkey has not yet ratified the Rome Statute, it can contribute meaningfully to the international community by adopting an active and principled stance in the fight against impunity. In this regard, as the TCICC, we once again call on Turkey to sign and ratify the Rome Statute and urge stronger support for international mechanisms that uphold peace and justice based on the universal values of human rights.
International Justice Day is not only a day of reckoning for crimes of the past, but also a call to action to prevent such crimes in the future. Today, it is our shared responsibility to strengthen solidarity and be the global voice for justice.
